It can be very difficult for those owners whose pet dogs are nuisance barkers. Nuisance barking is when a dog barks for long periods without stopping at every single little thing, or even for no reason at all, on a regular basis. As you can imagine, this can get extremely aggravating extremely fast.

One category of these products is collars with some sort of device attached designed to punish the dog for barking. These “anti-bark” dog collars come in many forms, but many of them involve some sort of mild pain as a punishment.
However, there is a more humane type. Citronella spray collars will spray a burst of harmless, hypoallergenic citronella spray at the dog when barking is detected in order to interrupt its behavior. The advantage of a citronella spray model is that it appeals to four of a dog’s five senses, thus increasing the chance of it taking affect. It has been shown to be twice as effective as an electric shock.
“Spray-Sense Anti-Bark Collar”, created by Premier, is one brand of these citronella spray collars. It is 6 x 13 x 2.5 inches and weighs 10.4 ounces. It comes with a one-year warranty, so defective devices can be easily replaced. The Spray-Sense collar is meant to be used for dogs that are at least 6 months old and weight at least 6 pounds. The spraying device is detachable, and the collar is nylon and 24 inches long. The device comes with a 6-volt alkaline battery and a 3-ounce can of citronella spray.
While it’s true that using a citronella spray collar is a much more positive experience for training your dog than using a pain-based collar using electricity or ultrasonic, that doesn’t mean it has no problems whatsoever. There have been some complaints that the Spray-Sense system goes off a bit too easily. There is also the issue that there is a limited amount of spray that can be stored in the collar at once; if the dog figures this out, it can “outsmart” the collar by continuously barking until the entire can of spray is used up.
